Samples by Hand

Warning!!! Oil soaked rags must be properly stored and disposed of as they can self-ignite. Place all oil soaked rags into a container of water or a metal container with a lid and dispose of properly.

  • The floor sample must be sanded with a 100 grit sanding screen or an 80-100 grit sandpaper.
  • Pour a capful of WOCA Wood Cleaner into 32 oz. of lukewarm water. Scrub the floor sample with a cloth moistened in the cleaning solution. The floor sample should be well dampened when finished, but not soaked. Wipe off any excess liquid. If Wood Cleaner is not available, simply rub floor sample with a moistened cloth. Allow the sample to thoroughly dry.
    OR
Brush the floor sample with WOCA Wood Lye or Softwood Lye and allow to dry overnight.
  • Pour a small amount of WOCA Master Oil or Master Color Oil onto the sample. Spread the oil with a paint brush or a piece of red Norton pad (or similar). Add more oil and spread as needed to cover the sample. The sample should be visibly wet and left to soak for 20-30 minutes.
  • With a piece of red Norton pad, wet polish the sample to force as much oil as possible into the wood. Polish the floor sample until it is fully saturated with oil. Wipe off the remaining oil with a cloth, then polish the sample with a piece of white Norton pad. When finished, there should be no oil on top of the floor sample and it should have a silky look. (For an exceptionally smooth surface and slightly higher sheen, attach a WOCA Patina Disk to the bottom of the red pad.)
  • Leave the sample to dry overnight. If using Master Color Oils, allow 24 hours to dry before applying the top coat. The sample must be completely dry and should not be “tacky” to the touch before proceeding with the top coat.
  • Top coating with WOCA Maintenance Oil Paste: Squirt a small amount of Maintenance Oil Paste onto the sample. Polish the paste with a piece of white Norton pad. Add Maintenance Oil Paste as needed to complete the sample using as little as possible. When finished, polish the floor sample once more with a clean white pad to ensure that no paste residue is left on the sample. For a slightly lower sheen, wrap a piece of cloth or WOCA Polishing Cloth around the white pad and polish the floor sample. This will assist in removing excess paste from the sample. When finishing larger floor samples, the cloth may need replacing from time to time. Once the sample is finished, it should have a silky sheen, which will harden into a slightly lower sheen.
  • Top coating with Master Oil and Master Color Oil: Polish a small amount of oil on the floor sample until an even silky sheen has been achieved, using a white polishing pad. Do not leave any oil residue on the surface. For a slightly lower sheen, wrap a piece of cloth or WOCA Polishing Cloth around the white pad when polishing.
  • Allow the floor sample to dry.
  • Some soft and very porous wood species, such as pine and walnut, may require a second top coat to achieve an even sheen across the surface of the floor sample. This is not necessary when using the Patina Disk for application of the base coat.
